Boombastic di Shaggy storia, testo e video

Orville Richard Burrell è l’autore di Boombastic meglio noto come Shaggy.

È nato il 22 ottobre 1968 a Kingston, in Giamaica e non sorprende il suo legame con il reggae. Per tutti è ormai Shaggy soprannome preso dal personaggio della popolare serie Scooby-Doo.

La sua famiglia emigrò negli Stati Uniti quando lui aveva 18 anni e si stabilì nel quartiere Flatbush, Brooklyn di New York City. Nel 1988, si unì al Corpo dei Marines degli Stati Uniti e prestò servizio nell'esercito durante l'Operazione Desert Storm, nella Guerra del Golfo.

Dopo il suo ritorno dall'Iraq, decise di iniziare la sua carriera musicale. E, senza dubbio, è proprio il brano Boombastic, nel 1995, a dargli il successo internazionale.

È il brano nel quale la sua voce diventa come un marchio di fabbrica, un tono baritonale e rauco che quando irrompe anche solo per qualche frase in altre canzoni lo fa identificare inequivocabilmente.

“Canzoni come Boombastic, Angel, Carolina...” dice Shaggy “...le canzoni che raggiungono le masse non provengono da qualcuno alla guida di un'auto e che ha qualche idea. Non ti alzi al mattino e senti che è uscito qualcosa di eccezionale... Scrivo canzoni ogni giorno, è quello che faccio. Alcune diventeranno un successo... è proprio quello che faccio”.

E in un’intervista aggiunge sulle canzoni: “Oggi ci sono troppi argomenti che hanno successo per sei settimane. Si parla molto di loro, ma ciò non significa che siano buoni. Ogni musicista vuole essere più di una semplice tendenza. Vuole far parte della storia... Faccio del mio meglio per rendere quella canzone che avrà molto successo qualcosa che durerà per sempre...” però poi conclude “ A volte quelle canzoni ti scelgono, piuttosto che il contrario...”
