Nel 1988, dopo aver superato un'audizione, divenne una corista della cantante Brenda K. Starr.

Invitarla a una festa, alla quale partecipava anche il produttore Tommy Mottola, direttore della Columbia Records diede prova delle sue capacità vocali.

Si dice che Tommy Mottola che stava già abbandonando la festa nella sua auto quando la sentì rimase così impressionato dalla sua voce da tornare immediatamente dentro per conoscerla.

Poco tempo dopo, Carey firmava un contratto con la Columbia per registrare il suo primo album, che sarebbe stato in vendita nel 1990.
